A Letter to You
To whom this may concern,
Well, I’m sure this won’t concern you
Another brown body dies to a gun
Another man remarks he cannot breathe for- you have again won-
I apologize for being so quickly undone, but let me bring this to your attention
I just can’t avoid this heavy minded nature of mine
They told me this knowledge I’m gaining would send me to freedom
I’d be walking the streets with the realities of the world bleeding out of my eyes in hopes of evolving- I would find direction in the lines of the palm of my hand that were once cracked, skinned, callused, and whipped
But each step taken begins to look like the last
Freedom screams in my peripherals as my (sub)conscious warns that really, I am just where you wanted me to be...
You, with your unmarked, defaulted, pedestaled, and waxed exterior
You- with your extremities wrapping, draping, and dripping all around me until my autonomy has vanished
The paleness in your power, ivory beckons mastery
Be more straight, less curved, more shambled, more submissive, be QUIET, move when told, speak when asked, have less consent, have no more consent, more beating yourself, less seeing yourself until the self isn’t seen
This knowledge I am gaining..
It isn’t truly freeing me- It just continues to swallow, suck, and pull.
What is a man without a preconceived idea?
Surely, he has always had a seat at the table
When a brown girl is born, she becomes nothing
Please stop the dismissing
A black woman shouts “WE DESERVE TO BE VALUED”, but you all don’t care
We are (I am) not an object for you to consistently penetrate, segregate, or generate hate- toward ourselves (myself)
Refrain from your beating and bruising. Abolish all forms of your abuse. Relieve the “silence” that is heard and turn up our sound.
Relinquish your willingness to take away our knowledge. Although it pounds on our innocence, it is igniting the exposure of your atrocious underpinnings.
WE WILL NOT ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR FORGETFUL NATURE AS PEACE.
WE WILL NOT BE SILENT BECAUSE YOU HAVE TRICKED US INTO BEING AFRAID OF SHOWING ANGER.
We will bark, scream, stomp until we have received actual freedom.
Freedom from being ugly, shameful, dark, repulsive, incompetent, and unworthy- But most importantly,
Freedom from being forgotten
